When the Geek Group moved into the Leonard Street Lab facilities in December of 2010, one of the most immediate projects that presented itself was removing the Rock Maple flooring that was in the old basketball court, which is now the Main Demonstration Hall. The maple was pretty fantastic- MFMA Grade AA Rock Maple, as good as it gets for one of Michigan’s most famous trees. Harvested in  1975, this wood has a growth and grain that is not so common anymore.

We are excited to be able to present these pens, which have been turned from that Rock Maple flooring. These pens have a design that is fairly unusual for an elegant pen: the hardware is a hex-nut design and the cap is magnetic. It will attach itself to either the tip or the end- ensuring that you will not lose the cap, even while writing.

These particular pens are extra-special because they are a traditional fountain pen! You can use them with a refillable cartridge OR go completely old-school and sit at your desk next to a jar of India ink. The hardware is interchangeable with the Magnetic Ballpoint Pen, so if you have both in different colours you can interchange them and have a different pen attitude whenever you like.

They are available in three finishes: Gun Metal, Chrome and Brushed Satin Nickle. Over at Geek HQ we are particularly fond of the fountain pen in gun metal, but all three look stunning. The grain on the maple absolutely pops on the slightly larger pen style.

This wooden cup was turned lovingly at The Geek Group’s HQ out of a piece of lumber that was harvested by another Michigan Geek Group member. We’re pretty sure it is mulberry – and it is rock hard. It is the perfect size for a table centrepiece, perhaps filled with candy or ornaments.

It is not recommended to use it for consuming food.

This chalice is full of character that keeps appearing as you study it. The major change in colour is due to a live edge retention that brought out the absolute beauty of this lumber.

This little piece of art is a clever play on aesthetic and words. The front half is a carved vase, and the back half is a post-modern block with a large hole cut in it that turns it into a fully functional vase. So the vase… is not the vase.

It is made out of laminated oak with a stripe of beautiful padauk in the middle.

While this vase is perfectly watertight, we do not recommend you use it with water! It is however a fairly standard size and would be perfect with a small glass insert if you want to fill it with flowers. It is also the perfect size for pens, paintbrushes, or even silk flowers.

It has been treated and sealed beautifully with a hard wax formula, and will deepen and dramatise in grain and colour when exposed to sunlight over time.

It is roughly six inches tall.

After many months of designing, engineering, prototype-building and planning, we are finally shrinking quarters with Project Stomper!

The quarters are shrunk with impressive power behind them: 6,000 volts and 100,000 amperes.

After the process- which happens in less than 1/100th of a second – the quarters are now about the width of a dime, although significantly thicker.

Shipping is free on this item- anywhere in the world! You will receive one shrunken quarter (which all vary slightly, due to the hand-winding process for shrinking),  along with a tiny , frame-able poster describing Stomper and the process that made your new shrunken quarter.

These blanks are a little over-sized, which is just perfect for getting creative with your turning. They are all at least 3/4″ square and 5″ long.

These have been cut from the birdseye AA rock maple that was once the gym floor at The Geek Group’s Leonard Street Labs facility. They were kiln-dried back in the 1970s and have remained extremely dry since then. The blanks have beautiful grain and figure to them.

This is for a pack of five pen blanks.

These blanks are perfect for knife scales, or could be cut up into turning blanks, or any number of other small projects.

Each blank is at least 1.75″x.75″x5″ and may be a little bigger. They are left thicker so that you can turn it into a turning blank, or cut it on a bandsaw to have a book matched pair. Up to you!

Sure, you can use a touchscreen device with your fingers. But they get very smudgy, and covered in fingerprints. An easy way to deal with this is to use a stylus- it also makes a lot of tasks more comfortable, as holding something like a pen is a very natural position.

This stylus is made from Pink Ivory, an extremely rare and exotic wood from southern Africa. It was traditionally a “Royal wood”, available only to royal family of the Zulus.

We will have these pens available shortly in other woods, including our very cherished birdseye maple!

This pendant started out as a defect, cast aside for the burn pile in a cabinet factory. We deemed it far too exceptional, as you can clearly see two trees had grown together into a single log. One tree was Ash and the other Fir. Between the two is a little bark and an exceptional wood trait called spalting, which gives it the character and beauty that holds the eye so much.

Because the wood was extremely delicate, each pendant has been fully submersed in epoxy resin (it took more than 6 coats!) so that it has the strength of plastic but the beauty of wood. As a bonus, this means that it can not only withstand hanging on a necklace but is fairly resistant to the rough & tumble lifestyle so many of us lead. It can get wet and is very easy to clean with just a damp cloth.

The pendant comes on a leather cord for easy wearing, but it could be easily swapped out onto your favourite chain, if you wanted. The cord is measured long (see the last picture) so that you can adjust the length to whatever you want.

These are made in extremely small batches (this batch had eight) and each piece has its own special charm and beauty.

This lamp is an ultimate marriage between chic, modern design and recycling. It is made from Michigan Cherry, and was rescued from being discarded into firewood or tossed into the compost pile.

Since it was salvaged, it is no surprise that it has plenty of character. The beautiful grain patterns include a lot of spalting, and there are some cracks that it came with before the turning process.

It has been polished and given a sturdy seal that will last for years and stand up to dustbunnies exceptionally well.

The lamp is about 24″ tall from the base to the top of the light fixture – not including lamp shade. This listing does NOT include the shade. If you are interested in the pair please contact me- but for shipping purposes, it is easier and cheaper to let you choose your own lampshade.
