We welcome volunteers – it is through the army of Geeks that we are able to Get Things Done. We get asked every day about volunteering, so here are the basics:
- Volunteers must be over 16 years of age. If you are a family with children under 16 and want to volunteer, please contact us and we will discuss it on a case-by-case situation.
- For volunteers who are under 18 years old, a parent or guardian must be present on their first visit. We have some paperwork for the parent to allow our younger volunteers to work freely at Geek HQ.
- We ask that our volunteers dress appropriately or be prepared to accept the consequences. This means closed-toe shoes, clothes that can get dirty, clothes that won’t potentially cause harm (such as long scarves or heavy beading).
- Remember that it is better to ask than to assume. It is okay if you don’t know how to do something. We know our volunteers can get overwhelmed at everything there is to know in everything that we do- we’d much prefer you ask how to do something than guess.
- We are available to members for volunteering almost every day, from 1pm to 6pm- and usually more hours than that. We are typically not open on Sunday.
- If you are visiting for the first time, please call or e-mail us beforehand and we will make sure that you get a tour. Our phone number is 616-466-GEEK.
- Activities vary from day to day and there are always different things happening in a single day.
- There are some specific areas of Geek HQ that use specialized volunteers and we are always looking for people to assist in that. Examples are Audio/Video Production, the Computer Lab, the Woodshop, and the High Voltage Lab. You do not have to have a background in the subject to work in it- just an interest in learning.
- Because we are a certified non-profit, we can do community service hours. This can be for your school, credit towards an advanced degree, job placement or legal compensation.
Geek HQ is located at 902 Leonard St NW, Grand Rapids MI 49504.
